The judgement passed yesterday by the Judge in Delhi against the 4 Rapists is very appropriate and deserving. That was the maximum sentence the Judge could pass and he deserved compliments for doing justice to his profession by giving this appropriate verdict.
This verdict besides serving as punishment for the Rapists like compensation for the sins they committed against the poor victim, will serve as a deterrent for the other would be rapists.
Would this type of appropriate and severe judgement be possible if it was not for the awareness and campaign done by the public especially in Delhi following this rape? I don’t think so, and precisely because of this, I applaud the campaign done by the public, first to force the government to upgrade the punishment laws for such rapes, and secondly to create fast track courts.
Thru this public campaign people got what they wanted. Hence it is a must for the public to create such awareness to get their demands materialised when authorities go to sleep. This is called peoples power.
From the fury the public displayed against this rape to pressurise the court to pass appropriate and harsh sentence, it looked that if the court had to be lenient then public would themselves take the law into their own hands and hang the rapists publicly on the streets of Delhi.
It is to be seen now in the backdrop of public fury whether the public would conduct the trial of the juvenile rapist and hang him publicly by taking law into their own hands when he comes out of the juvenile prison.
This juvenile rapist as per the available information was the worst criminal. Unless he is severely punished physically, there is every possibility for him to repeat such incidents. When he comes out of the prison after 2 years, he will be a big threat to society. Everyone concerned should take note of this threat and accordingly deal with him.
I must also applaud the great role media played in campaigning for harsh punishment for these rapists.
