DEATH OF COCONUT TREE IN GOA?

R.I.P. COCONUT in Goa?  I don’t think so since it is too early to say yes because the way campaigning is going on to oppose the government  move  to declassify Coconut Tree from the category of Trees,  it looks Coconut Tree will be brought back into the fold of Trees either tomorrow or the day-after-tomorrow.  I don’t know who is the expert in the government to declassify Coconut Tree.  Coconut Tree and Coconut are the most essential parts of the Goans.  There is a saying in Goa  “you kill one coconut and you kill the support of one Goan”, that means,  one person can survive on one Coconut.  Our elders used Coconut Trees to build houses for them to stay, Coconut to fill their stomach and its Oil for different purposes including medicinal.  No part of Coconut Tree is wasted, so important is its utility  in our life,  besides helping to fortify the environment.

It is a rubbish decision of Goa government with a stroke of a pen  to convert this mighty tree into a piece of grass when it is not.  Because it is the life of Goans, for the first Assembly election in Goa Dr. Jack Sequeira as the President of UG Party selected Coconut Tree as the Symbol of UG but for some reason Election Commission rejected it. Coconut is also used as a religious symbol and when PDF government was formed under Dr. Proto Barbosa along with the master defectors Churchill Alemao and Mauwin Godinho, as it was given to understand, the entire ruling faction of PDF took the oath of allegiance by swearing-in on the Coconut,  in one of the Temples in the North Goa.

Though the power of Coconut is so fantastic yet its effect can turn into a big Zero when a person acts like a zero meaning “sarko Nal”.  I am sure Parsenkar government will  turn into a big “Nal” if not immediately then in the coming election for demoting Coconut Tree inspite of public outcry against the government decision.
