GOAN SUPPORT FOR KUWAIT'S CAUSE.

This year on 26th February I sent a congratulatory message to Kuwait on the occasion of its Liberation day. Kuwait was invaded by Iraq on 2nd Aug. 1990 and was liberated on 26th Feb. 1991. In this connection I sent the congratulatory message thru this forum. Immediately following this message Mr. Francis D’Souza from Canada sent the following response.

“ REMEMBERING GOAN MOVEMENT FOR KUWAIT'S LIBERATION.

FRANCO DSOUZA

6:19 AM (2 hours ago)

Hi Veronica,

You never forget to remind us of the invasion of Kuwait, your contribution to oppose the invasion also will always be remembered, we all peace loving Goans at that time took some crucial steps that had a great bearing on world opinion, we may be spread all around the world since then, but can never ever forget those dark invasion days.

Francis Dsouza
Canada.”

The response refers to the movement we Goans organised in Goa under the banner of GOA-KUWAIT SOLIDARITY CENTER during the invasion of Kuwait. Our movement initiated by myself started in October 1990 and lasted till March 1991. During this period we in Goa organised 2 big public meetings at Azad Maidan, Panaji and 2 big public rallies on the streets of Panjim. Both these events – Meetings & Rallies - were covered by the national and international news agencies including CNN. Besides, we also organised at lower level other activities in support of the liberation of Kuwait. The effect of our movement felt immediately in Delhi alerting government of India and Kuwait Embassy as well making Kuwait Embassy in Delhi to communicate with us in Goa thanking us for supporting Kuwait so openly, so boldly and so forcefully. Letters and Faxes we received from Kuwaiti Ambassador in Delhi in this connection are in the custody of this writer.

I was one of the earlier Goans to be recalled for re-employment by my company in Kuwait, it was in April 1991. My recall by my company has got nothing to do with our movement. Since my company management felt that my services are required, they recalled me. After coming to Kuwait I saw many of our Goans were not recalled by their respective companies and very few Kuwaitis were aware of what movement we did in Goa for the cause of Kuwait. And to tell you the truth many in Kuwait were annoyed at India’s stand of being bias towards Kuwait. India’s foreign minister Gujral’s embrace to Saddam Hussein in Iraq during the early days of invasion of Kuwait was looked upon with hatred in Kuwait thereby acquiring some sort of hatred for India.

I was very much concerned of our people still not recalled to Kuwait. In order to impress upon Kuwaitis of what we did for their country’s sake and to gain their goodwill, I spending money from my own pocket made copies of the Video Cassette of our movement, approximately around 500 copies and circulated with Kuwaitis to make them aware of what we did for the cause of their country Kuwait. Simultaneously, I made photographic big Albums with all the photos and other relevant details and correspondence done in regards to our movement and these Albums I circulated with Kuwaitis to impress upon them of what movement we did for the cause of Kuwait. The total number of Albums was 100. Both the activities of Albums and Video Cassette preparing cost me around 1000/- Kuwaiti Dinars which I spent from my own pocket without anybody’s help. Neither anybody asked me whether I needed any financial help for this great and important job.

Within a very short time the news of our movement with the help of the publicity done thru Video Cassettes and photographic Albums, spread everywhere in Kuwait mainly in Kuwaiti circle including Kuwait TV whose anchor and News Reader Adeeb Shuoibar showed the pictures of our movement twice in KTV2 programme with nice commentary, once on 15th September 1991 during the interview conducted by KTV of visiting Indian Foreign Secretary Mrs. Sharma. From this publicity the name of Goans among Kuwaitis reached to the pedestal which also helped many Goans stranded in Goa to get recall on their previous employment. Because of the name and fame Goans acquired among Kuwaitis, many of the other Indians became jealous towards Goans. It must also be noted that by showing our Video Cassettes and Albums to Kuwaitis many of our people brought their nearest and dearest to Kuwait.

Then under the banner of GKSC, we in Kuwait at Plaza Hotel Ballroom started organising public meetings in support of the release of Kuwait’s POW’s. These meetings were organised on 26th of every February till the fall of Saddam Hussein. These meetings were considered of very high profile and highly important for the release of Kuwait’s POWS and for the relationship between Kuwait and India in general and between Kuwait and Goa in particular. Such high profile meetings were never organised in Kuwait by any expatriates community. These meetings were attended and addressed by the top diplomats, Indian Ambassadors, high ranking expatriates in Kuwait from different nationalities and high profile Kuwaitis including members of the Royal family. Thru these meetings we indicated to everyone how great we Goans are. Very many Non-Goans who were dubbing us as the community of Domestics now came to know how great intellectually we Goans are. In one word the rating of Goans reached to the zenith, thanks to all who involved in making our movement a force to reckon with. Because of this movement Kuwaitis of all ranks started not only interacting with Goans but also integrating with Goans.

As a step forward, in this connection, I on my own initiative and expenses on behalf of GKSC went to Delhi and with the cooperation of one MP Mr. Khan from Hyderabad who was the Chairman of Indo-Arab Friendship Society met with the top Indian leaders, world diplomats stationed in India including chiefs of Arab League and OIC based in Delhi requesting them thru Memoranda submitted by me to them, to work speedily for the release of Kuwait’s POW’s. This news flashed thru media like wild fire making Kuwaitis at all levels impress upon Goans very highly.

What we Goans have done for the cause of Kuwait during its critical time no other individual community has done and in this exercise what role I personally played none among the expatriates played, leave aside Goans and other Indians. What I did it was done on ideological ground and not to get personal benefit and I expected nothing and expect nothing either. In fact by doing so much I have not gained any personal benefit, neither have I sought any personal benefit. As long as there is peace in Kuwait and as long as our people get opportunities to work in Kuwait, it is enough for me. This is my wish and happiness.

Finally to reach our movement still to more people, recently I have made one more DVD of our movement as latest edition but with commentary in English. Very shortly I will release it for circulation. Let this DVD circulate more and more especially with Kuwaitis and thru this medium let the bridge built between Goans and Kuwaitis remain strengthened forever. I may not be here in Kuwait for long but let our Goans working in Kuwait be proud of what their elders have done for the cause of Kuwait. Let the Kuwaitis say anything but let them also know that we Goans have stood by them when some of their own brothers in race, religion and language deserted them. Also the new generation of Kuwaitis should know of our contribution for the cause of Kuwait by seeing this DVD which will be easy for them to understand since the commentary is in English. Thru this DVD let every Kuwaiti know that we Goans are not just “Hindi Muskin” but a community with rich heart, rich intellectual power, rich gratitude and rich love and affection for Kuwait having supported Kuwait during its critical time as none among Indians did. Our support for Kuwait was not a purchasable commodity because it was priceless.

Kuwait: Goa’s thespian star Cajetan Pereira, popularly known as Cajetan de Sanvordem based in Kuwait, will release his maiden Konkani video album entitled, ‘Xiddukh Ravath’ (Be Alert) in Kuwait on 10th May 2013.

The video in a crystal clear DVD format is set for a grand release on 10th May 2013 during the staging of the Musical Evening (Songit Sanz) - ‘Kazar Zatam, Punn?’ at the Indian Community School, Salmiya.

Cajetan de Sanvordem, a Kala Academy Award winner for Best Actor and Konkani Bhasha Mandal's Best Singer Award winner, has been in the limelight on Konkani stage – acting and singing in dramas, films and videos, for over 3 decades and remains one of the most popular and much loved artiste in Kuwait.

‘Xiddukh Ravath’ presents a number of songs composed by Cajetan de Sanvordem and Michael D’Silva. The music is provided by Maestro Shahu Almeida while the classy Cinematography and Editing is attributed to Franky Fernandes.

The album, shot entirely in Kuwait, features celebrated Gracy Morais, Clemmie Almeida, Katty de Navelim, Bab Agnel, Irene Vaz, Michael D’Silva, Mario de Majorda and Cajetan de Sanvordem supported by Clara Rodrigues, Baby Acacia, Jemima, Joshua, Aerosmith, Janet Franco, Braz de Parra, Domnic Mascarenhas, Agusto Fernandes, Danny Britto, John Furtado, etc.Picturisation of each song intertwined with rhythmic beats showcases the Goan spirit of Konkani-style songs -- making the album artistic, rich and melodious.

The title song, ‘Xiddukh Ravath’, a solo by Cajetan de Sanvordem has to be seen to be admired. The filming of this song is incredible. The theme has a lesson for everyone to be alert about a disease in this modern era that is most terrifying.

Gracy Morais and young Clemmie (Cajetan’s daughter) render their voices for a sweet song called ‘Visiting’ which throws light on the hard-life abroad.

‘Bolatkar’, is a splendid trio by Cajetan-Michael-Mario based on some of the hottest issues in our society at the moment.

Katty de Navelim’s ‘Posko’, is a beautiful song sequenced with scenes enacted to perfection by John Furtado and Clara Rodrigues.

‘Soro ani Cigar’ is a comedy duo by Cajetan de Sanvordem and Michael D’Silva sung to a rhythmic tune. The song displays the class of the two singers.

Irene Vaz and Bab Agnel sing ‘Be-Visvaxi Ghorkarn’ highlighting the character of an unfaithful wife. Irene looks fabulous in the video.
The trio, ‘Madras Vailankanni’ by Cajetan-Michael-Mario is a treble of great excellence stressing on the evils of Goan politicians.

Mario de Majorda and Bab Agnel’s song ‘Dar ani Uzo’ is sure to enthrall viewers for the amazing act in the backdrop by Janet Franco, a popular personality in Kuwait. The song too is very meaningful.

‘Nirmilelem’ is a touching, beautifully composed song sung by Clemmie-Cajetan-Michael-Mario.

Michael D’Silva is dressed up as ‘Postman’ singing a comic song. The song is fantastic; however, the posh backdrop displayed can be easily recognized as that of Kuwait, and not Goa, as the song depicts.

The entire album has an excellent flow of music by Maestro Shahu.

Cajetan de Sanvordem has fondly dedicated the project to his beloved parents late Jose Salvador and late Maria Magdalena Pereira.

Cajetan first came into spotlight when he was just 8 years of age singing in school and village dramas. He landed in Kuwait in 1976. His first appearance on Kuwait's stage was in P. Jose de Colva's drama 'Aiz Maka Faleam Tuka' at Keefan Hall in 1977, followed by Konkani dramas directed by Jenifer Rod, Aleixinho de Maxem, Benny de Aldona, the list goes on.

Initially he sang solos in each and every drama as well as act, especially when the role was based on expatriate topics. Together with Marcus Vaz and Xavier Gomes, he formed the famous trio Cajetan-Marcus-Xavier, which created waves and enjoyed tremendous popularity in Kuwait as well as other Gulf Countries and in Goa. Currently, Cajetan is teamed up with Mario de Majorda and Michael D’Silva. The singers are famous for explosive lyrics and are synonymous with Konkani audience for their intellectual lyrics, stunning style and a blend of their incredible voices.

Cajetan has acted in countless Konkani dramas (Tiatrs). The prominent among them are of Late Fr. Freddy J. Da Costa, M. Boyer, Remmie Colaco, Anthony San, H.Britton, Jose Rod, Roseferns, Jess Fernandes, Patrick Dourado, Vitorino Pereira, A. Morais, R. Morais, Rosario Dias, Chrismeena, Rosary Ferns, Marcus Vaz, Laurente Pereira, Mario de Majorda, Michael D'Silva, Xavier Gomes, Bonaventure D'Pietro, Jessy Dias, Jenifer Rod, Aleixinho de Maxem, Benny de Aldona, J.P. Parra, Tony Call, Mendes Bros., F.X.Pereira, F.Cardoz, Simon Gonsalves, Joe Ferrera, etc.

Cajetan is well-known in Kuwait for being the lead star in Goa’s first e-Cinema feature film ‘Black’ produced by T-Bush in 2007. He also appeared on the smaller screen in a specially filmed VCD of Jose Rod's drama ‘Devan Dilem Devcharan Velem’. Cajetan has also written and directed dramas such as 'Bhattkarachem Kortub' and 'Africar' in his home town back in Goa.

Besides acting and singing, Cajetan is a well-known public figure in Kuwait. Time and again, he has been elected to several Indian organizations. He is the President of United Friends Club – a football association and the Ex-President of Kuwait-Goa Tiatristanchi Sonstha (KGTS). He is also the President of Guardian Angel Club of Sanvordem (Kuwait), Head of Cultural Cell of Goan Welfare Society (GWS) since inception, and an active member of Kuwait Indian Football Federation (KIFF).

‘Xiddukh Ravath’, made for a global audience is sure to leave a mark of Cajetan de Sanvordem’s class as a showman – a singer and actor of immense ability.

GOA MAROONS, UFC, NYC AND INDIAN STRIKERS IN LAST FOUR

In exciting quarter final matches of KIFF league for the J.P. D’Mello Trophy organized by Kuwait Indian Football Federation and played last Friday at the MOH Grounds in Shuwaikh, Goa Maroons upset Kerala Challengers 3-2 while Navelim Youth Centre edged AVC Sports & Cultural Association 1-0 and Indian Strikers trashed Kuwait Goan Association 5-2 to join United Friends Club in the last four.

In the first match of the day, KGA and Indian Strikers started and ended the first half on equal terms with the score level 2-2; before Indian Strikers went on to add three more in the second half to take the game away from KGA. Agnelo Martins and Cheslee scored for KGA while Aiva Sameen and Roy Pathroso scored two each for the winners and Sainudeen scored one. Roy Pathroso was declared Man of the Match and received his award sponsored by Integrated Logistics Company, from the hands of Indian Strikers President William Stronach. The match was officiated by IFRA officials, Francis Fernandes, Tiago and Julio Cardoso.

In the second match at 8:45am, former champions Navelim Youth Centre took one step closer to the final when they edged strong contenders AVC 1-0. The all important goal was scored by Cruzedio in the second half when he latched on to a pass from new signing Sanford Cardozo to side step Vincy in the AVC defense and score past the outstretched hands of goalkeeper Alvaro Dias to set up a mouth watering semi final clash with UFC. United Friends Club (UFC) last week had beaten Real Betalbatim in the tie-breaker after normal time had not produced any result and the man of the match was Ramson Costa the goalkeeper of Real Betalbatim and he received his award from Mario Carneiro. Cruzedio was declared man of the match and received his award from Julio Cardoso. The match was officiated by Tiago and he was assisted by Michael and David on the lines.

In the final match of the day, 10 men Goa Maroons came from behind to shock Kerala Challengers 3-2 in an exciting encounter. Kerala Challengers got the first goal in the 10th minute of the first half when Sumesh scored from a free kick . Maroons equalized almost immediately when Ian scored from the penalty spot after diminutive forward Joe was brought down in the box. Kerala Challengers made it 2-1 when Abdul Thuyadi beat the Maroons offside trap and scored on the stroke of half time. In the second half Maroons were reduced to 10 men when Steven Rodrigues was send off by referee Michael for a second booking and when it seemed that Kerala Challengers would qualify for the semi finals, hard working Gaby scored one of the most bizarre goal this season when he back heeled a cross from Larry to level the score 2-2 and take the game to extra time. It was in the dying minutes of extra time that Joe was again brought down in the penalty area and Ian made no mistake in scoring from the penalty spot to give Maroons a famous win and qualification to the semi finals. Kerala Challengers easily one of the strongest team in the league will rue the missed chances they had in the second half. Gaby was rightly declared man of the match and received his award from Tony Gonsalves the ex-president of United Goans Centre. The match was officiated by Michael Dias and he was assisted by Nikush and Francis on the lines.

The semi finals are slated for 31/5/2013 with UFC taking on Navelim Youth Centre at 6:45am followed by Indian Strikers playing Goa Maroons at 8:45am. The finals of this prestigious tournament will be held on 14/6/2013 at one of the major stadium in Kuwait. This year’s final will be graced by the popular soccer star and India football captain Sunil Chettri who is a household name in India and overseas. Chettri was recently instrumental in helping Churchill Bros of Goa lift the I-League title and is one among only three Indian Players who had an overseas stint with foreign clubs. He first played in American Major League Soccer club Kansas City Wizards in 2010, and had a brief stint with Sporting B’s in Portugal before returning to India.

NAVY GET OUT - GO TO KARWAR SEABIRD - CARLOS ALMEIDA - MLA VASCO

 floriano lobo

[May 24, 2013] - MOVE NAVY AIR TRAINING TO KARWAR, SAYS CARLOS. [Pg.5]

COMMENTS:

And our Metallurgy IIT'an esteemed Chief Minister tells us that the NAVY will not part with even one square meter of the Dabolim land. We Goans want to know from our CM if he has the GUTS to even 'stammer' in favour of GOA in the presence of the Navy and the Army.

Well done Carlos Almeida and Fulgencio Rodrigues [ former deputy Sarpanch - Chicalim-Bogmalo who has protested against the low flying aircrafts of the navy creating unbearable NOISE POLLUTION to the bonafide residents in the area.

Since 1961, the invader NAVY has considered Dabolim as it's father's property. [Fr. Eremito Rebello ' NAVY'CHEA PAICHO FAT NOI' ]. And our cuckholded successive Governments and the pensionated free-dole farters have had no guts whatsoever, but to keep quiet and give in to the NAVYs and the ARMY's ever growing DEMANDS on Goa's scarce land even to the extent of them taking away our pristine islands and beaches, citing 'SECURTY REASONS' but actually holidaying and merry making in Goa which they actually think is their PAICHO FAT.

The CHORUS that is now echoing to say 'NAVY GET OUT' will only end when the NAVY has been shifted lock stock and barrel to Karwar Seabird, and the Army's presence in Goa reduced to the bare minimum extent with their SIGNAL HEADQUARTERS in Panjim taken over, which prime property the Army has been using as if it is their PAICHO FAT.

This CHORUS is echoing even from the YOUTH OF GOA who have taken to dancing on the streets - 'FLASHMOB STYLE' to shout 'NAVY GET OUT' . Very soon the CHORUS will be adding 'ARMY GET OUT'

Cheers:

floriano,

ONLY DABOLIM - WITH NAVY OUT

SPECIAL STATUS FOR GOA IS A MUST

VIVA GOA - VIVA GOEMKARS

WE NEED DABOLIM AIRPORT ONLY AND NOT MOPA.

The first time I saw physically the Dabolim Airport was in 1959 when as a student of Portuguese School, Escola Primaria de Abade Faria - Candolim, we were taken on excursion to see this Airport. I was very young boy at that time and during that time I saw how Portuguese Pakle soldiers guarding the Airport were nice and courteous to us. It was not congested, one Plane was seen ready to take off while another at a distance was lying idle and it was not operational, partially broken. As a small naughty boy, without any body’s notice, I jumped into it and shouted my Eureka for getting an opportunity to sit into the Plane for the first time in my life though it was partly broken one. Approximately 5 years prior to this date of our excursion, this Dabolim Airpot was commissioned and made operational and officially put into the control of civilian authority and NOT NAVY.

After Goa was forcibly annexed to Bharat in December 1961 against the wishes of greater number of Goans, Indian Navy without proper official formalities and discipline, in haste took control of Dabollim Airport because during that time there was chaos everywhere in Goa and Goa was treated like an enslaved territory by its Bharati masters having no voice and no proper authority to talk for Goa and Goans. Everything was dictated from Delhi and by one Mr. Handoo who was the then advisor to the Bharat occupied authority of Goa. Delhi Babus treated Goa as a colony by thinking and deciding for Goa and Goans as per the benefit of them and not for the benefit of Goa and Goans. During that time Goa was treated by Delhi Babus worst than Lisbon Salazarists headed by Dictator Salazar; in fact Portugal protected interest of Goans much better than Delhi Babus headed by traitor Nehru who cheated Goa and Goans.

The Dabolim Airport under the control of Indian Navy is become a pleasure center for the Indian Navy men. It has got vast area to create facilities for huge aircrafts to land round the clock. The area is so vast that even there is one soccer ground and Golf Course for Navy men for their recreation. If Dabolim Aiport is to be upgraded for the top and most advanced Aircrafts, the current Dabolim Airport Authority can easily utilise only 25% of the available land under the control of Dabolim Airport. According to experts if only 25% of the available land is used to upgrade the current facilities at Dabolim, there is no need of one extra Airport at Mopa.

What prevents the Indian authorities to upgrade Dabolim Airport to international standard and scrap Mopa? The answer is very simple; Indian Navy wants to keep Dabolim Airport entirely for its own use only. Everybody is giving an assurance that when Mopa is operational, Dabolim will not be closed for civilian Aircrafts. It is a pure lie. Recently even Indian Defence Minister Mr. Anthony gave the same assurance. If Anthony’s government in Delhi collapses tomorrow then the new government will never support the decision of Antony. In fact the new government will decide the new policy which may be worst. The way governments are changing, the policies are also changing in India.

Parrikar is assuring Goans that Dabolim will also remain operational for civilian Aircrafts once Mopa starts. Who is Parrikar to give false assurances to Goans? Who is Parrikar to give such an assurance as if Dabolim Airport is his “Bapaichem Bens”. Parrikar is not an authority to talk on Dabolim. Parrikar does not know whether his government will survive tomorrow. If his government falls he will be nowhere to protect his assurance. Parrikar is fooling Goans as if he is the owner of Indian Navy. Indian Navy does not care for Parrikar and for that matter for nobody in Goa. In the name of national security Indian Navy can usurp any land from Goa. Parrikar is supporting Mopa because of the Land Scam there. According to one source, all the influential persons and politicians including Parrikar from Goa purchased the land pieces at and around Mopa very cheaply. Once the Mopa Airport becomes a reality then the value of the same plots will be like that of Diamond. Parrikar is a crook and a liar. In the coming general election, Goan opposing Mopa Airport must campaign very hard against Parrikar’s BJP and defeat both the BJP candidates.

Goan MP “Tallo” Francisco Sardina was assuring Goans not to worry for Dabolim Airport saying it will also remain functional side by side Mopa. Sardinha is a big liar and selfish. Who is he to give assurance that Dabolim will remain as it is for civilians Aircrafts? Dabolim Airport is not the “Paicho Fath” of Sardinha. It is on record that both the former Chief Ministers of Goa, Sardinha and Luizinho Faleiro have written two letters separately to the Central government to make hurry to build Mopa Airport as soon as possible. See these both the so called Goa lover Goans how they are betraying Goan interest. They are both traitors like Judas. Such traitors should be stoned to death without giving them a chance to commit suicide like Judas. Now the responsibility falls on the shoulders of Saxttikars to ask Tallo Sardinha and Faleiro the explanation of these letters and under whose instruction they wrote these letters.

Indian government wants Goa as a brand name to sell its services to the outsiders in the name of Goa. The Mopa Airport with a prefix or suffix Goa will attract more passengers mainly the tourists. Mopa is at the border of Maharastra and most of the benefits of this Airport will go to the Maharastrians. From Mopa Airport it will be closer to go to the Maharastra where more hotels will come up giving more jobs to Maharastrians. In Maharastra bordering Mopa, because of Mopa Airport business and tourism will boom and its facilities will be captured by the Maharastrians. Tourism will collapse in Goa giving rise to unemployment. Mopa Airport will better serve Maharastra and not Goa.

And finally to you Alinabai, if you are real wife of your late husband Mathanay Saldanha believing in gis principles, you will oppose Mopa very strongly.  If necessary, even by surrendering your porfolio.

ON MOPA AND LIARS INDIAN AND GOAN LEADERS.

Because of the personal gains, many like Parrikar are issuing statements saying when Mopa becomes operational, Dabolim will also remain functional as usual. For me this statement is a pure lie because nobody has authority to issue such statements, This statement is to fool the people of Goa.

In India there is not a single leader on whom we can rely and to whom we can trust. In India all the Indian leaders are selfish and liars. Every Indian leader is corrupt. We Goans were not like this, we Goans got polluted with Indian dirty habits only when India annexed Goa and passed this contagious desease of corruption on to us. The end result of this desease on us is so strong that our corrupt Goan leaders and even ordinary Goans can easily out beat any genius in corruption from any part of India.. The highest authority of India, the then Premier of India, the late Jawaharlal Nehru, betrayed Goans with a Judas Kiss by not fulfilling his word when he himself had assured Goans that the separate individual identity of Goa will be maintained. And finally Nehru proved to be a liar.

Following the invasion Goa by Bharat, somewhere in late 1962 Nehru visited Goa and on one fine late afternoon visited Calangute Beach. Since this visit was announced earlier, to see him there from close angle, innumerable people from Calangute, Candolim and other surrounding villages thronged at Calangute Beach and being a Sunday the crowd was more. There was only one hotel there known as Caravela touching the beach. His simple motorcade with a few security personnel was a pleasure to see. With smiling face he came out of his car and waved to the enthusiastic crowd waiting to see him. Seeing his facial appearance one could easily read his forehead which said he was overwhelmed to cast his glance on the Queen of Beaches that is Calangute Beach with silver sand.

After halting for a few moments and casting his glance on Hotel Caravella, he moved down to the Beach and straight went to the Beach up to the watery waves standing there and admiring the greatness of this beautiful Beach. Then after a few minutes he turned back and waved to the crowd gathered there, all Goans and genuine Goans who were wearing very decent dresses. In that crowd there was not a single Lungiwala nor Zopatpatiwala as it was in other parts of India. Then speaking a few words he said  "Portuguese stayed in Goa for 450 years and during this lengthy period Portuguese did not do any good to Goans except the Portuguse made you Portuguese. You Goan people got different and decent characteristics and your life style is also totally different which has to be maintained by keeping Goa’s unique identity intact.

Four years later Nehru died and with him his promise was also interred with his bones. This is the quality of Indian leaders. If Nehru was true to his promise he would have granted Special Status for Goa immediately following the ouster of Portuguese from Goa but he did not want to do this since he was intentionally fooling Goans and our Goan leaders were not smart enough to put pressure on Nehru to fulfil his promise. And to our bad luck suddenly from nowhere a traitor in the frame of Dayananda Bandodkar came on to the scene and demanded to kill Goan identity by merging Goa with Maharastra. For this purpose with the backing of corrupt Maharastrian leaders Bandodcar formed a political party known as Maharastrawadi Gomantak Party. This party splitted Goa and Goan interest. The greatest enemy of Goa was Dayananda Bandodkar who tried to liquidate Goa from the Map by merging Goa with Maharastra. The greatest enemy of Goa was Bandodkar, his MG Party and all who supported MGP. This was the big tragedy of Goa which told us that our enemy was within ourselves only.

Now some Goan and Delhi leaders are wooing Goans to accept Mopa. I feel we genuine Goa lover Goans must never trust any Indian leader. They are ignorant, liars and crooks. The efforts to put pressure on Goa government to scrap Mopa Airport must be increased. By shouting we may get nothing but by keeping silent will we get anything? Hence all Goans must stand behind Fr. Eremit to face the challenge posed by Parrikar and his colleagues.

Parrikar must know that in the last election his BJP party came to power not because Goans loved Parrikar and BJP but Goans hated Congress Party. For this reason top heavyweights in Gongress Party lost the elelction. Nowhere in BJP Manifesto gave a single clue that Mopa will be built. Their Manifesto remained totally silent on Mopa and because Mopa was not in their Manifesto, Goans voted BJP to power. Hence BJP has robbed the trust of its voters. Parrikar and his BJP has to pay the price for this "Chori" in the coming Parliamentary election and also in the next Goan election.

CHURCHILL ALEMAO AT HIS SARCASTIC BEST.

$

By Nisser Dias 30th May 2013

Earlier last week I was quite surprised to read former PWD minister Churchill Alemao’s statement to the media during a press conference. Of course he addresses the media less frequently since his ouster from active politics but most often it is for self glorification or clarification and resurrection of his political career. However his statement last week had different undertone, texture and it was sarcastically intelligent.

I say so because for the first time the Varca strongman was subtly taking digs at the electorate for keeping him and the Congress party and also his family out of the Legislative Assembly. He took pot-shots at the chief minister Manohar Parrikar for trying to appease the minority communities in Salcete with his frequent trips to Margao and neighbouring villages and offering sops. While praising the government for its decision to name the Collectorate building after late Mathany Saldanha, Churchill said that the BJP should also field a minority candidate in South Goa for the up-coming Lok Sabha election next year.

Elaborating further former chief minister of 19 days said that since the BJP government took over the administration of the state more than a year ago, prices of essential commodities has dropped. He made this statement knowing very well that the prices are still soaring and though chief minister Parrikar has abolished Value Added Tax (VAT) on petrol, he has actually burdened the common man much more by raising the slab of other taxes. And with entry tax being imposed on non-state vehicles bringing essential commodities to Goa, Goans will have to dig deeper into their pockets.

Churchill Alemao surely must have engaged the services of a public relations (PR) company to tutor him on what, when, where and how to speak. This crosses my mind because he slyly touched a sore spot. Infact I would say he rubbed salt and vinegar into the grouse of the Christians and Muslims by stating that since BJP took over the reins of governance, beef is easily available. It is a known fact that both these communities sell and consume beef. Ironically the cat was let out of the bag when it was exposed that chief minister Manohar Parrikar happened to be the adviser of the NGO that knocked on the doors of the High Court to redress the grievances prevailing at the government abattoir. The message that Churchill was trying to send was, while the chief minister is trying to hoodwink the minority community with sops and friendliness, his long term hidden agenda is very much alive and he puts it into action not very obviously but deviously.

While the Congress party is yet to deliberate its failure to comeback to power in the state, Churchill seems to have introspected his and his family’s defeat. For a year now he seems to be the only member of the clan who addresses the media, there is no sign of Valanka Alemao, Yuri Alemao is fleetingly seen in his car, Joaquim Alemao is more in Malaysia than Goa. Churchill and Valanka both have stopped doles to the poor and needy. For them it is since they have not been elected there are also no poor and needy in Goa or maybe Goans become poorer when they are elected.

Apart from all this the new side of Churchill seems to be very attention-grabbing as his statements have a double edge to it. While he cannot antagonize the chief minister Manohar Parrikar directly due to the alleged scam in the PWD during Churchill’s tenure as PWD minister at the same time he cannot mount a scathing attack on the people and his future in politics lies in their hands and hence he is doing it ingeniously. That is the power of the long distance correspondence course that Churchill Alemao had enrolled himself in years back. He is finally putting it to great use.

Since this is his first time addressing the media so tactfully, he will take some time to convincingly answer the queries of the media. Infact he exposed himself when the media questioned him on his stand on the proposed airport at Mopa. His comment was that he started the movement against Mopa airport while he was in the Save Goa Front party. Ironically he forgot all about it after he rejoined the Congress immediately after the elections. He further said that he did not attend the hugely attended meeting at Lohia Maidan on 15th May 2013 because he would be made to sit in the audience. First and foremost Churchill Alemao had not only ditched the movement and the Goans but was convinced that both the airport could co-exist while he was in power. He had clearly stated that his SGF manifesto claimed that he would retain Dabolim airport and the media had called his bluff. But now having lost all his credibility and power he is desperately trying to gain sympathy of the people. And for the sake of Goa and Goans which he says he loves so much, what is there for Churchill to sit in the audience. He has to face the reality he is no more a VVIP but a simple common man.

He further went on to question the presence of ministers Alina Saldanha and Avertano Furtado at the meeting. Churchill demanded that they either force the chief minister to stop going ahead with the airport or quit his cabinet. When reminded that people also demanded the same thing of him while Digambar Kamat was pursuing the proposed airport he said that he expressed his willingness to resign from the cabinet.

Ironically resigning as a minister is one thing and threatening to do so is another. People saw through his rhetoric and false promises and sent him home. Churchill needs to do some homework on this issue.

Over the years we have experienced both the sides of Churchill Alemao. One as a commoner and the other as the elected representative of the people. And there is a vast difference. While not in power he attracts people with experience, wisdom and intelligence around him and seeks their advice on issues. After coming to power he distances himself from this group and gathers ‘Yes men and henchmen’ around him. People of Goa have seen this over the decades and are unlikely to be fooled again.

WHERE ARE THEY GONE NOW?

Before BJP came to power in the last Goan election, Congress was ruling in Goa. The biggest loot of Goa was systematically conducted without any fear of anyone by these Congressmen. Almost all the Congress ministers were looting Goa, not only they but even their close and distant family members including their dogs and cats even. With the amount of looted money power flowing into their hands they could even go to the Moon for Honeymoon not with their wives but with their concubines because almost every Congress MLA and every Congress Minister was having a concubine; according to one source not one concubine but in dozens. These concubines were provided with lavish amenities to lead a very lavish life because looted money power was great into the hands of these politicians, it was easy money and not hard earned.

With the enormous amount of money power into the hands of these politicians, a few of them used to travel and visit Kuwait regularly, almost every second month either as Chief Guests for soccer final or for Tiatro or for annual dance organised by the Kuwait Goan Associations and soccer clubs. While coming to Kuwait they were not coming individually but in groups with their close relatives, friends and neighbours as well. According to my information these visitors used to spend lakhs of rupees for their Air tickets, boarding and lodging and for sponsoring the functions that they were coming to attend. This much of money an ordinary person cannot easily spend but these Goan politicians were spending such a big amount because almost everyone was on looting spree in Goa. They were looting Goa and Goans.

By being in Goa they used to sponsor the Shows and Events in Kuwait by spending their own money in lakhs which were looted from Goa. They did not feel the pain to earn this money because it was accumulated thru loot of Goa. It was easy money they collected from the blood of poor Goans by extorting bribes from them. I remember when we Kuwaitkars brought Churchill Alemao as a chief guest to the Tiatro in late eighties the expenses for his entire trip including Air Ticket and boarding and lodging was borne by the Kuwaitcars. But during the recent past when Congress was ruling Goa prior to the current BJP government came to power these politicians spent money like water for their visits to Kuwait. Some of them were even begging with Kuwaitcars to allow them to come on their own expenses to Kuwait as chief guests and our cheap Kuwaitcars were obliging them. Some of them while coming were bringing even their mistresses to have fun with them in Kuwait. This was the power of their looted money. Good that they lost in the last election otherwise Goa would be finished by them and not by the uncontrolled influx of non-Goans.

It is now almost a year that these Congressmen are out of power and being so their financial power is also gone down because as Ministers and MLA’s they cannot do the same barbarity on Goans to extort money from them as bribes for services they rendered. Since their money power is gone down their visits to Kuwait are also gone down. In Kuwait among Goans nobody remembers them. Earlier even one Goan soccer team was sponsored by Churchill Bros.

Now my question is this: Where are all these politicians gone now since their defeat in the last election? Not a single political heavyweight is visiting Kuwait. Where are they gone now? And where are their Kuwait chamchas gone? There were so many soccer finals played in Kuwait, there were so many Tiatros organised and other events but not a single of them came to attend the same as chief guest since the last Goan election. It is a pity now to see that once making a big show in Kuwait the same Goan politicians are become unknown not only to Kuwait Goans but also for those individuals and associations in Kuwait who enjoyed their doles.

There is a saying which says “When you laugh the whole world will laugh with you but when you cry, you will have to cry alone”.

And those in Kuwait among Goans who boast of their closeness to the Goan politicians, they must know one more saying which is in Konkani and it says:
"ETA BILU VETA BILU - PUN BILUCHI NADDI KHUIM KOSMELEA"

AN INDISCIPLINED CHIEF SECRETARY.

Discipline is vital to the success of any administration but Chief Secretary Mr. B. Vijayan who is heading the bureaucracy in Goa is not leading by example. Mr. Vijayan who came to Goa in Nov 2010 completed his two year tenure way back but has just refused to move out of Goa despite his transfer order having been issued. After having sent repeated reminders asking Mr. Vijayan to swiftly shift to Arunachal Pradesh, the Union Home Ministry has now reportedly issued him a show cause notice for having failed to comply with the directives.

My spy camera in the corridors of power has revealed that Mr. Vijayan who is due to retire in Sept next year is now contemplating taking VRS and is eyeing the post of State Chief Information Commissioner which will enable him make Goa his retirement nest for the next five years. Mr. Vijayan may succeed in this mission as he has obligingly been bending and bowing down to all the dictates of Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar by signing on the dotted line.

DISGRACE IN INDIAN CRICKET MANAGEMENT.

If I were in his place, I would not only resign as the chief of BCCI but I would also commit a suicide out of shame for what my son-in-law has done by taking advantage of my power and position. But Srinivassan the chief of BCCI like a shameless pimp still refusing to resign forthright by keeping all doors open for him to come back at an appropriate time, at a later date even though 2-3 colleagues of his out of shame have already resigned from BCCI.

Sticking up to their posts when they should resign owning moral responsibility is the forte of Indians. In the history of independent India owning moral responsibility for the Railway accident in early sixties as Railway minister Lal Bahadur Shastri resigned even though Nehru as premier pleaded with him not to. But Shastri was a man of calibre and of highest character. Srinivassan by owning the responsibility of the disaster of betting scandal created by his own son-in-law should have resigned gracefully.

Because of the ill doings of their immediate family members many of the leaders have suffered. Because of her younger son Sanjay Gandhi’s mischief Indira Gandhi suffered during emergency era. Because of the arrogance and cruelties of their sons, Saddam Hussein, Mohammed Ghadaffi and Husni Mubarak suffered. Similarly Srinivassan also became the victim of the ill doings of his son-in-law. But as a gentleman either he should have disowned his son-in-law the way Mahatma Ghandi disowned his son Hiralal or submitted his resignation on moral ground immediately following the arrest of his son-in-law. If he had to do this he would have been hailed in India and in the cricketing world as the most upright man and a saviour of gentlemen’s game Cricket.

The tactics and the mode followed by Srinivassan in the aftermath of his son-in-law’s betting scandal is not correct. He is following the path some corrupt Indian politicians are following to save their political chairs. By following this negative path Srinivassan shows that BCCI is his father’s property. This one man is taking Indian Cricket hostage for his own personal benefit.

When this destruction of Cricket goes on in India the important personalities and cricketing legends are watching as silent spectators. Where are the current and former great cricketers gone now? Why they cannot raise their voices in unison against Srinivassan who is inflicting heavy damage on Indian Cricket? Where are all the Gavaskars, Wadekars, Kapils, Tendulkars, Shastris and others gone now? Did their mouths lock by Srinivassan? When they speak, their voices carry weight.

When Boxer Mohammed Ali spoke against the arrogance of USA in fighting war in Vietnam, the impact of it was so great that finally forced USA to put an end to this ugly war. Similarly if all the Cricketing legends in India speaks against Srinivassan I am sure some concrete result will be produced.

Unfortunately, in today’s meeting held at Madras, in a dramatic fashion BCCI followed the wishes of Srinivassan and kept him aside for the time being instead of removing from his post. Earlier scandalous person Dalmiya was instead brought in to fill the gap created by Srinivassan. One crook is replaced by another crook.

From here one can make out how crazy Indians are for the power and position. It is a pity that such lust for power is penetrating in sports arena also, earlier it was confined to political arena only. We saw earlier how Indian sports has been destroyed by Suresh Kalmadi and his craze for power to his big chair. In this way, these crazy for power and position Indians will totally destroy sports in India.

J.P.DMELLO ROLLING TROPHY
INDIAN STRIKERS AND NAVELIM YOUTH CENTRE IN FINAL

Sunil Chhetri to grace finals at Al-Qadsyia Stadium.

Navelim Youth Centre trashed United Friends Club 5-0 and Indian Strikers edged Goa Maroons 2-0 in semi-finals of KIFF league for the J.P. D’Mello Trophy organized by Kuwait Indian Football Federation and played last Friday at the MOH Grounds in Shuwaikh. The final of this prestigious year long tournament played under the auspices of KIFF and officiated by the Indian Football Referees Association will be held at the Qadsyia Stadium on Friday, 14th June 2013 at 6:00pm. The tournament is sponsored by Gulf Cable Electrical Industries Company.

In the first semi-final, Navelim Youth Centre boosted by the presence of playmakers Bernardo Pires and Sanford Cardoz in midfield and backed by the likes of Duarte Ferrao and Alfred Pires in defense have jelled well as the season has progressed and have peaked at the right time making them firm favorites against Indian Strikers FC the first Keralite team to play the final of the KIFF league. United Friends Club who have featured regularly in the last four had no answer to the Navelim onslaught with man of the match Simao Gauncar feeding his teammates to score at will. Sanford scored the first from a goalmouth melee and Bernardo made it 2-0 when he latched on to a sublime pass from Simao to score one of the goals of the tournament. Bernardo scored again and Cruzedio and Joaquim completed the rout. The match was officiated by Philip Ferrao in the centre and assisted by Francis and Alvaro on the lines. Franky Sequeira a former KIFF member on a visit to Kuwait gave away the Man of the Match trophy to Simao Gaunkar of NYC.

In the second semi-final, former champions Goa Maroons were left ruing the numerous chances missed in the first half by their forwards Joe Gomes and Durvesh as Indian Strikers scored just before half time when their star forward Amasameen struck from a counter attack to send shockwaves in the Maroons camp. Anthony Adimai and Roy Pathroso playing their hearts out literally took Maroons out of the equation when Anasameen scored again in the 10th minute of the second half from a brilliant back heel pass by Biju. Goa Maroons missing the presence of Steven Rodrigues, who was out with two yellow cards have only themselves to blame as chance after chance went begging. Young Cleevan DÇunha, Larry and Roger coming in as second half substitutes failed to make a difference for Goa Maroons and in the end Indian Strikers FC won comfortably. The match was officiated by Sarto Baptista and he was ably assisted by Christopher Fernandes and Vincent Pereira on the lines. Anasameen was declared Man of the Match and received his award from Xavier Furtado the Vice President of AVC Sports and Cultural Association.

The finals between Navelim Youth Centre and Indian Strikers promises to be an exciting affair with a buildup of the Goa versus Kerala angle and is expected to be well attended with both teams having tremendous support and will be played on 14/6/2013 at the Al-Qadsyia Stadium (Hawally) at 6:00pm. The final will be graced by H.E the ambassador of India to Kuwait Shri Satish C. Mehta as the chief guest, Mr. Naser Omran Kanan of Gulf Cable Electrical Industries as the guest of honor and flamboyant and popular soccer star and India football team captain Sunil Chettri. .

AVERTANO FURTADO THE GIANT KILLER OF NAVELIM - WELCOME TO KUWAIT.

Dr. Francisco Luis Gomes from Navelim, Salcette, Goa was a great parliamentarian representing Goa in Portuguese Parliament where he created a very strong impact of his debates. He was known to speak out his opinion very forcefully and logically. He had strong conviction of his opinion. He was a pride of Goa and Goans and in a special case he was the pride of Navelim. It was an honour for Navelkars to have such a great parliamentarian from their midst. He used his talent for the good of Goa and Goans.

On 7th of this month, Avertano Furtado another son of Navelim who in the last election in Goa created a history by defeating his opponent Congress heavyweight Churchill Alemao will be the Chief Guest for the soccer final of Navelim organised tournament in Kuwait. By defeating Churchill Alemao what looked impossible before the election Avertano Furtado made it easily possible thereby knocking down the illusionary notion that Churchill Alemao was unbeatable.

Avertano Furtado is coming to Kuwait not by spending looted money from Goa as some earlier politicians used to do but he is coming to Kuwait as a guest of Navelim Youth Center who will bear all his expenses. According to one Navelkar, Avertano Furtado does not need to loot Goa, he is a straight, simple and humble man. By the grace of God may he remain so throughout. Navelkars elected him thru their goodwill and not thru money. Avertano Furtado did not pour money in front of the voters; it was voters who elected him thru their freewill.

Regarding Mopa Airport, earlier representatives of Navelim, Churchill Alemao and Luizinho Faleiro played the role of Dr. Jackyl and Mr. Hyde. They were not upright in declaring their full hearted opposition to Mopa Airport. Besides Mathany Saldanha not a single heavyweight MLA showed his opposition to Mopa Airport.  Mopa is the doom for Salcette. But who cares for Mathanay Saldanha’s opinion now? He is dead and gone and in the bargain his wife Alina buried her husband’s opinion against Mopa in Mathanay’s grave. Now it looks even she is not caring for her husband’s opinion. It looks she not only forgotten the anti-Mopa opinion of her husband but she also forgot her dead husband when Parrikar drugged her not only with MLAship on silver platter but more than that a Ministership.in his cabinet.

By the end of this year Mathany will be a history for Alina who failed to fight with Parrikar against Mopa as per the wishes of her husband. It looks Alina is more concerned of her ministerial position than to keep the memory of her husband alive. For the sake of Power and Position backed by huge amount of money some people will even forfeit their relationship with their families too.

Avertano Furtado was elected as an independent MLA and as such he is not the product of BJP. Parrikar it looks has given him the cabinet post not because he loved Avertano Furtado but more to please Christian community in Goa. Otherwise Parrikar is a born anti-Christian. I still remember his cancelling of Good Friday holiday earlier. What good a Christian expect from the RSS man?

By fighting in Portuguese Parliament Dr. Francis Luis Gomes got facilities for Goans in Goa. Because he acted in support of the Goans he is remembered by Goans even now otherwise he would be a history, unknown and unsung. In Kuwait, Navelkars always stood in unison for the good of Goa and Goans. Many of the Navelkars played a very prominent role for the cause of Goa. I can still remember the roles of Kuwait Navelkars namely Elvino Rodrigues – President of Kuwait Konknni Kendr, Thomas Fernandes, Luis who are no more in Kuwait and also of others for the promotion of Goan causes. For the cause of Konkani and Goa-Kuwait Solidarity Center Movenet during the invasion of Kuwait they performed excellent roles. These Navelkars raised the names of Navelim to the pedestal by being true to their conscience. They stood firm to their principles by supporting the right causes for Goa. Will Avertano Furtado emulate them or hide under the Umbrella of BJP and Parrikar?.

In a similar manner as a true son of Navelim maintaining the tradition of great Navelkars, Avertano Furtado must not remain as silent spectator over the cries of Goans against Mopa airport. Avertano Furtado as a true Goan and a true Navelkar must strongly and openly support the campaign to scrap the Mopa Airport. If necessary he should even resign from Parrikar’s Cabinet to side with the people who got him elected. Parrikar and his BJP have not elected Avertano Furtado. Avertano Furtado is a product of Navelkars who are raising their voice against Mopa and as such Avertano Furtado cannot afford to ignore this voice of his voters who elected him against the mighty opponent.

And coming back to Kuwait Navelkars, they must during their interaction with Avertano Furtado in Kuwait get an assurance from him that he will openly support the anti-Mopa campaign to scrap Mopa Airport. Otherwise his second term in the Assembly will be an illusion to him. Last month when I visited Goa, I saw him attending a meeting at Margao Loia Maidan organised to campaign against Mopa Airport.

I was pleased to see him attending the meeting seated on front row. This was a silent support for the anti-Mopa Airport movement but now he must take a next step and tell Parrikar either to scrap Mopa or scrap me from your circle in which case he will be a patriot of Goan cause. Avertano Furtado needs to gather courage to oppose Parrikar on Mopa. Seeing him he looks physically capable of opposing Parrikar on Mopa issue but ideologically and intellectually will he? Time alone will tell.

Meantime, I welcome Avertano Furtado to Kuwait and hope he will enjoy Goan hospitality in a usual Goan tradition.

Kuwait.

hi,

since you know a lot about him, can you clear my doubts about ONE issue that is a blot on his career... don't get me wrong, even I hope he succeeds in politics in the future...

BBBUUTTTT... the one issue in which Avertano seems to be caught up is.... Is it true that the accused in the rape of the school girl in Vasco is not arrested because of pressure from him?????

A. VERONICA FERNANDES REPLIES: Avertano Furtado at this moment is in Kuwait and he will be in a better position to answer the above question. This is a very serious issue which Avertano Furtado cannot ignore because without fire there cannot be a smoke.

INHUMAN WAY OF DEPORTATION.

Illegal invasion of Kuwait by Saddam Hussein was the great criminal act committed by him on the small and peace loving country Kuwait. Equally great criminal act committed by Saddam Hussein was allowing his soldiers to arrest expatriates in invaded Kuwait while they were going to work and deport them back to their home countries. This was on the first day of the invasion of Kuwait.

One of my friends Royal Agnelo on the day of the invasion of Kuwait was going to work early in the morning in his car along with his colleagues. He was not aware that Iraqi troops have already entered and captured Kuwait. Suddenly at one particular spot while driving to work he was stopped by the Iraqi soldiers. He and his colleagues were surprised of this raid on them. They did not know till that particular moment that the soldiers on Kuwaiti streets who captured them were Iraqis. This was most intriguing moment for them because they had firm belief that Kuwaiti soldiers and also Police force will never arrest them recklessly without valid reason. But finally they accepted the fact. Then they were pulled out from their vehicle keeping it abandoned there only on the road and dumped them like goats into the Iraqi bus and sent them to Basrah for deportation to Bombay after a few days.

During their imprisonment first at Basrah and then at Baghdad they were kept like goats in a very congested room without proper sanitation, food, water and other amenities necessary for their survival. Royal Agnelo’s wife and children were kept in total darkness of where about of him because the inhuman and stone hearted Iraqi soldiers did not even allow him to call his wife at home in Kuwait to inform her of what has happened to him and where he is and many others too who were caught similarly on the streets of Kuwait. Arresting innocent expatriates is one crime while preventing them from calling their families to inform of what has happened to them is another crime. It is not only a crime but a big sin that one can commit against one’s religion. It is also a violation of human right.

Iraq being an Islamic country and also a member of OIC had to maintain certain discipline of Islamic religion which shows lot of compassion for the weak.  Islam is a great religion which shows soft corner for the weaker segment of the society.  By treating Royal Agnelo and his colleagues in inhuman ways the Iraqi soldiers of Saddam Hussein commited a great mistake.

After my evacuation from Kuwait to Goa, I discussed this criminal act of Iraqi regime with top politicians and Muslim scholars who condemned this inhuman act of Iraqi soldiers against innocent human beings. Some Muslim scholars condemned it saying such treatment to human beings by Iraq was against their religion because Islam forbids such inhuman treatment. According to them Islam is a compassionate religion which treats even captured enemy soldiers in the war with compassion and with human decency and not with Jewish barbarity as Iraqi soldiers did to Royal Agnelo and his colleagues and to others as well.

What they were losing by giving an opportunity to Royal Agnelo and to others with him to phone their family members in Kuwait? By denying the opportunity of phone call Iraqi regime and its soldiers put innocent people into unbearable tension. This was a human right issue and during my involvement in Goa-Kuwait Solidarity movement in Goa in support of the liberation of Kuwait I made lot of noise on this topic to know them how some of the Arabs are treating expatriates in their countries. Somebody even suggested to me to go to Delhi and conduct a Dharna in front of Iraqi Embassy to draw the attention of all of the barbarity of Iraqi regime. A group of people even volunteered to come with me to Delhi to make m;ore noise.

Deportation is ok for law breakers as per the host country’s law but not in inhuman manner. The deported persons should be given the facility to call their family members to inform that they are caught by the security for breaking the law of their countries and that they are going to be deported. This is the civilised manner. But what good one can expect from the brute regime of Saddam Hussein? And on top of it Saddam Hussein took pride in his Muslim religion which otherwise forbids human rights violation. Because of human rights violation lot of expatriates are suffering in many of the countries they work. Treating expatriates with indecency and in an undignified manner is like a curse which God alone can cure.

GLOBAL GOANS.

GLOBAL GOANS

By Aires Rodrigues

When this government assumed office 15 months ago on 9th March last year, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had rightly pointed out that Goa’s exploding population needs to be frozen. But this government has done nothing towards achieving this end, except the empty talk on Special status for Goa. Infact the government has been drafting in more ‘migrants’ and even posting them in high positions despite there being no dearth of qualified Goans available.

Infact the role of the Goa NRI commission should have been to act as a catalyst in drawing avenues and opportunities to encourage Goans currently out of Goa to return back and preserve their soil.

Historically, Goan emigration patterns have unique characteristics which differ from the rest of India. The Inquisition and religious persecution were evident in the sixteenth century. Later, the Portuguese and the Jesuits introduced excellent schools with Portuguese and English as the medium of instruction. However, there were no opportunities available in Goa for the products of the system which were snapped up elsewhere. This trend is evident even in the present day.

Mumbai (Bombay) and service on ocean liners were the targets for emigration at the turn of the 19th century. This changed to East Africa, and when the doors closed there, the Gulf States beckoned. More recently it has been United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and the United States.

The Overseas Goans led the Struggle for Freedom against the Portuguese. They provided the motivation for the political leaders to take action. Of course, those in Goa did not have the opportunity to protest.

Though the Catholics have always been a minority within Goa, they have been the majority in terms of emigrants. The reasons for this are complex but their names, religion, diet, attire etc. led them to be easily identified. The Goans abroad developed a pride in their identity, which passed from one generation to the next and also manifested in an urge to preserve the culture and assist their kith and kin back in Goa.

The motives were not always altruistic. The Non Resident Goan was known to flash his wealth in a most obscene manner in order to attract attention and in the hope of obtaining recognition. Church roof repairs, school extensions, Community halls etc. were the favoured targets of charity as one could then negotiate the mounting of a plaque to record the generosity for the world to see.

There remains a disturbing perception of the ideal Goa as seen by the average Non Resident who would like it to remain unchanged, and as a source for cheap idyllic holidays. The Non resident Goans and more importantly, the youth want to see changes with employment opportunities. They would prefer to make their home in Goa.

Fortunately, in recent years, there have been changes in how overseas Goans perceive Goa. This has largely come about because of computer communications and also because of the greater tolerance and even encouragement of ethnic cultures abroad. There are a number of electronic mailing lists for Goans – international ones, regional, village, alumni, etc. and they focus on issues and projects for the support of Goans in Goa and those abroad. Communication between Goans even in the same neighborhood abroad, which was once impossible, is now available to all.

At the same time in the countries abroad there is a growing awareness and acceptance of a multicultural society. There is a growing appreciation not only of the food but also of the music, dance, literature, festivals, folklore etc. In that climate the Goan culture is nurtured abroad and the next generation is learning more about it than the previous one.

Goans abroad have invested in Goa whether it is money deposited in Goan banks, holiday homes or in business ventures. However, the overseas Goans are not always totally satisfied with what they see in Goa. They are repelled by the culture of corruption that has become a part of the new Goan society and just cannot relate to the acceptance of these standards.

The bureaucratic processes endemic in Indian methodology puts off many Non Residents from investing locally. Over the years International Goan Conventions have been held to deliberate on issues concerning Goa and related to Non Residents. There had been a unanimous demand for the Government of Goa to set up an NRI (Non Resident Indian) Centre as a focal point to redress problems of NRIs and to see what role they could play in the progress and development of Goa. In response to this demand the Government of Goa set up a “NRI Commission”. We have yet to see anything concrete achieved by this outfit, which started in February 2006 with ambitious plans.

Many NRIs after years of service abroad long to settle in the land of their origin. But for many reasons they get disheartened and give up. For someone who has never witnessed water supply shortages or power failures it is a nightmare coping with the erratic water and power supply which has been a matter of routine in this State of Goa. NRIs also feel that the prospects of a good education in Goa for their children is bleak and this is something the Government should focus on. Good hospitals and quality professional educational institutions are something Goa so dearly needs.

Overall, if Goa’s infrastructure is improved this will motivate many NRIs to come back and set up shop in the place that is so dear to them. But politicians have their fingers in every pie, and nothing runs professionally or free from political interference.

In recent years a lot of Goan politicians have made overseas trips, ostensibly as study projects abroad. It was expected that they would bring home some ideas to improve things here. Unfortunately, these trips at taxpayer expense have in reality been shopping and sightseeing junkets for our politicians.

I remember the 70’s when one had to stand in a queue at Panaji (Panjim) to make an ordinary/ lightning telephone call to Bombay, let alone overseas. Today with the evolution of Information Technology we are in a different world. Goans across the globe keep track of what is happening in Goa on a day to day basis through Goan newspapers which are on the Internet.

Many Goans feel the urge to play a role in shaping the future of Goa but the authorities would have to play their role to encourage NRIs to return and invest their skills and savings in the land of their roots. The very high level of corruption in Goa is something every NRI detests. So a war on corruption by the Government of Goa could be the starting point in bringing Goa closer to every NRI Goan.

The modern NRIs are far more professional, skilled, articulate, motivated, caring and affluent than the previous generation. They have an empathy towards Goa and regard it more than just another holiday destination. These sentiments have to be tapped by the Government with the aim of seeking mutual benefit. But all too often the Government is out to exploit and fleece them.

NARENDRA MODI - BJP AND CONFUSION IN BJP.

The elevation of Narendra Modi to the position of chief of BJP’s election campaign is a step forward for the demolition of BJP in the next general election. Elevating Modi to that position means openly disclosing the bankruptcy in BJP rank of having no good leader to shoulder that responsibility. Some in BJP rank including our Parrikar feel Modi is the saviour of the country now. Modi is nothing but a butcher under whose leadership a decade back poor Muslims were ruthlessly massacred in Gujarat. Just because he won the election for BJP in Gujarat for 3 times that does not mean he is the leader of national stature. Modi is only a regional leader with parochial thoughts who can swim only in Gujarat and not at all India level. All India level is a big ocean where Modi will never be able to swim.

By raising Modi to the pedestal in BJP rank Congress chances of coming back to power at all India level are brightened. Victory for Congress at all India level was almost assured on silver platter because it is a very good opportunity for the anti-BJP forces to dump Modi in the gutter by citing the atrocities Modi committed on minority community Muslim and making this subject as a big election issue. Knowing his ruthless atrocities against Muslims, I think no member of minority communities will elect his BJP. He can take Gujarat for granted but surely not other parts of India. And if by chance he is appointed as Premier, Indians will have to put their heads down in shame for having such a rowdy man as premier. At international level he will be a big failure and globally India’s image will also suffer.

I as a Christian am afraid to vote for BJP where Modi is in a top position. Modi means massacre and amputation of the minorities in India. Just because he is good for Gujarat that does not mean he is good for India. Because of his ruthlessness against minorities in India he was banned from entering into the West. It will be a big shame for Indians to be under his leadership. In Gujarat under Modi's leadership people are not having bath in Milk. Still due to unemployment in Gujarat many Gujaratis are coming to Kuwait for low grade jobs. Modi has not created a Heaven in Gujarat. He is just an ordinary leader with Goebellian art of fooling the masses.

His main purpose to come to the top position is to demolish Congress. I heard many speeches he delivered but in all his speeches he vomited fire against Congress. No doubt Congress has to be punished because many of the India’s ills are the doings of Congress but his mind and tongue should not be focussed on Congress only. So far he has not disclosed his plan how the poverty in India will be finished. He has not told how he will finish unemployment in India. So far he never mentioned how he will bring changes in India and uproot corruption from Indian soil.

According to my assessment, if Modi and his BJP comes to power, BJP men will do worst than Congressmen by imbibing all the bad habits and feudality of Congress. Like Congressmen, BJP will never identify themselves with the masses. They will behave and live like Maharajas exactly the way Congressmen are doing. During the Goa BJP meet there was chartered Plane for its president Rajnath to take him to Delhi. What a pompous show at the cost of taxpayers’ money!! Parrikar also frittered away public money by releasing government advertisement for this meet. This Goa meet was the private affairs of BJP where public money should not be spent but Parrikar and his BJP spent without caring for anything. From here one can visualise what harm BJP will do if they come to power.

Parrikar may be thinking the entire Goa is for his BJP. No, the entire Goa was for destroying the family Raj system in Goan politics and the entire Goa was all for destroying Congress in Goa. Taking this view into consideration, Goa voted out Congress and in the bargain Parrikar’s BJP got elected. In the next election Parrikar and his BJP will be taught heir lesson well.

The meeting of BJP in Panaji was a great failure and this fact can be accepted from the manner some of the top BJP leaders abstained from taking part in this meet. There was heavy opposition from the senior leaders to elevate Modi and the crack that appeared now will be magnified during the coming election. Advani the seniormost BJP leader has already fired a salvo by submitting his resignation. To destroy Modi now you don’t need Congress and other opponents but the opponents living in the BJP only will destroy BJP. The enemy of BJP is now residing within itself only. The innocent blood of those who were killed in the aftermath of the Babri Masjid demolition by BJP and those of Gujarat under BJP's Modi will never allow BJP to live in peace. Confusion in BJP is the punishment of God for BJP.
