ARE CIVIL SERVANTS IN GOA SLAVES OF CHIEF MINISTER PARRIKAR AND HIS BJP PARTY?

BUREAUCRACY IN GOA HAS GONE FOR A TOSS

By Aires Rodrigues

The bureaucracy should have been independent and impartial but sadly in Goa it is not living up to this reputation. The bureaucrats in Goa have totally surrendered to the political rot. The Chief Secretary who heads the bureaucracy should have led by example and kept the administration free from political interference. But the current incumbent Mr. B. Vijayan has been shamelessly bending and bowing all over, while signing on the dotted line at the dictates of Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar. This not only sets a bad trend, but will also expose the bureaucrats to criminal prosecution for intentionally misleading the Government on vital matters.

Government employees cannot be directly or directly engaging themselves or participating in any work pertaining to any political party. At the two day BJP conclave in Goa held at the Marriott last weekend, so many State employees including the official staff of the Chief Minister were assigned various chores at this political party meet. On 13th Dec last year, the entire bureaucracy led by Chief Secretary Vijayan queued up at the BJP office in Panaji to greet Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on his birthday. This was totally out of place because no government servant should ever have an occasion to visit an office of a political party. T he Conduct Rules also prohibits such acts. They could have wished the Chief Minister or even kissed his feet in his office at the Secretariat or his official residence.

Over the years we have seen successive governments using bureaucrats as pawns in their political games, but the situation has reached a flash point under this current one man regime. And it is precisely to achieve his nefarious ends, that Manohar Parrikar has been crying hoarse that incompetent officers are being sent by the Central Government to the State, since he wants officers who do not advise nor question, but just shut up and listen.

We need to stem the rot over this interdependent chronic relationship that exists between Ministers and civil servants. May be its time the parameters of the relationship between ministers and civil servants is made abundantly clear by having a code of conduct for bureaucrats and a code of ethics for ministers which ensures a neutral relationship between a minister and civil servants. These codes of conduct and ethics should clearly outline the division of responsibility between the ministers and civil servants with the fundamental focus being on the political neutrality and impartiality of civil servants preserved at all costs. The bureaucrats in Goa are the new caged parrots.

NOW CM MANOHAR PARRIKAR’S U TURN BY WAY OF DOUBLE TALK.

In an apparent bid to seek and arouse passions over the issue of Special Status for Goa, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has now expressed concern that Goa was on the brink of ethnic dilution as the uncontrolled migration into Goa was diluting the state’s ethnic character

"Unrestricted migration and whole-scale transfer of land is beginning to submerge the unique Goan identity” is what Manohar Parrikar said.

Mr. Parrikar further stated that "The apprehension is that Goans will become an alienated microscopic minority within their own State,"

The same Manohar Parrikar this week amidst much funfare inaugurated the Dawoodi Bohra's residential colony at Socorro in Porvorim.

In his speech there Manohar Parrikar said “As 80% of your community members are into business, I would like to invite and welcome more people from your community to our state," while assuring them all help in their endeavors in Goa.

Such double talk by Mr. Manohar Parrikar has become the order of the day. Fortunately, the people of Goa including some of Manohar Parrikar’s own cabinet colleagues and party MLAs have now awakened and wizened up and will no longer be fooled by such empty deceptive talk.

FEAR GRIPPED INTO EXPATRI.ATES HEARTS IN KUWAIT.

Fear has gripped the hearts of many expatriates in Kuwait mainly those law breakers whose residence permits are not in order, traffic rules violators and those who reside and work in Kuwait illegally. These days everyday number of expatriates are caught and deported to their countries of origin. In this campaign by the personnel of Interior Ministry many Indians are caught, some are according to the available news deported immediately as per the gravity of the offence. According to information some expatriates were deported even without the notice of their families in Kuwait though I find it extremely difficult to believe it in the absence of concrete evidence because Kuwait is not a country that indulges in such inhuman and cruel deportation like Saddam Hussein’s Iraq.

Citing an example of inhuman deportation by Saddam Hussein’s Iraq, I have to mention here that on the first day of the invasion of Kuwait on 2nd August 1990 when Saddam Hussein’s soldiers after invading Kuwait caught on the road many expatriates going to work. Among these expatriates there was one of our Goan brothers Royal Agnelo who along with others was not only without any reason caught and sent to Baghdad but from Baghdad sent direct to Bombay without even giving him an opportunity to inform his wife and children back at home in Kuwait of whereabouts of him.. Agnelo’s family in Kuwait for so many days were suffering from tension strokes not knowing what has happened to Agnelo, whether he was alive or dead. This type of inhuman behaviour suits Saddam Hussein’s soldiers but surely not for Kuwaitis if the news circulating around on this topic is true.

Kuwait is known to be a compassionate country in the Gulf and not brute like Saddam Hussein’s Iraq to indulge in cruelties towards poor expatriates. Overwhelming majority of expatriates in Kuwait are poor and just because they are poor they come to Kuwait for better gains. They are coming to Kuwait not because they were dying in their countries; they are coming to Kuwait to sell their services in return for Dinars. They are human beings and children of the same God and as such they should be treated like human beings and not like the way Saddam Hussein’s Military personnel treated.

Kuwait is not a place for financially rich expatriates and intellectually advanced. For this reason these poor expatriates should be treated with pity and compassion while punishing them with deportation. They are neither criminals nor terrorists. They came to Kuwait thru legally obtained Visas for which many of them paid hundreds of Dinars to their sponsors who should also be held responsible for bringing these expatriates and leaving them on the road instead of providing them the jobs. These sponsors are the first who come to know of the expiry of the residence permits of these expatriates in which case they should take appropriate action in the right time before it becomes chronic. Now the situation is become chronic where innocent expatriates may also have to suffer. May God alone guide us in the right direction.

During my 3.5 decades in Kuwait, this is the first time I see such a ruthless and massive campaign done by the Kuwait government to rid Kuwait of expatriates who are staying illegally and working illegally. Also in this campaign falls Traffic rule violators and other law breakers. The fear in the residence permit violators is such that having no option to hide from the view of the security personnel who even come to the houses of expatriates at night time, one of them was caught hiding in the bucket as seen in the photo above.

I don’t blame the authorities in trying to rid Kuwait of illegals and law breakers but I only pray for little decency and compassion. No expatriate wants to settle in Kuwait permanently. Nobody wants to make Kuwait his permanent home, everybody wants to return to his home country otherwise expatriates would have stayed in Iraq invaded Kuwait but instead they preferred to leave from invaded Kuwait immediately following the invasion by Iraq.

I pray to God to guide us all in the right direction and He alone will help us in this critical situation.

WHAT WERE MANOHAR PARRIKAR AND ATMARAM NADKARNI UPTO ON WALKING STREET?

By Aires Rodrigues

A friend in Bangkok has revealed that Manohar Parrikar and Atmaram Nadkarni were once seen together strolling down the “Walking Street” at Pattaya in Thailand. What an awesome place to be and relieve your stress!

I did question Atmaram Nadkarni about that strange destination they ventured into. After a characteristically initial denial, he did confess that he had gone there with Manohar Parrikar but that it was for a conference. Atmaram Nadkarni who always claims to be very spiritual and god fearing, could however not state what conference they had attended.

Mr. Atmaram Nadkarni, we all very well know what “Walking Street” is infamous for and what ‘conferences’ are held in that red-light district known for its many go-go bars and brothels. Next time we can’t find Atmaram Nadkarni in Goa, should we track him down the Walking Street in Pattaya?

All this only throws light on Manohar Parrrikar and Atmaram Nadkarni’s love for Casinos and its other tagged ancillary services provided to customers. Manohar Parrikar and the flamboyant Atmaram Nadkarni are in the right company, together steering Goa from disaster to doom. In the current mess that Goa finds itself enveloped in, we have landed from the frying pan into the fire.

GOA SU - RAJ PARTY ON TENANCY ACT.

Herald: [19Jun13] "Govt considers amending Goa Daman & Diu Agricultural Tenancy Act"

http://www.epaperoheraldo.in/Details.aspx?id=9325&boxid=16142734&uid=&dat=6/19/2013

GSRP COMMENTS:

The Goa Su-Raj Party is happy that the Goa Government is thinking in terms of improving the State's diminishing Agriculture through 'contract farming'. Successive governments have culpably abandoned this sector, and as a result, GOA has become absolutely dependent on the neighbouring States for it's agricultural produce.

However, this party is totally against any amendments to this vile Tenancy Act, 1964, the brainchild of the vote-bank appeasing Bandodkar Government which has robbed the COMUNIDADES of GOA vast tracks of it's agriculture and horticulture lands and handed them to it's tenants for free, allowing such lands to be squandered by keeping them fallow and/or selling them illegally, through the connivance of the government agencies, thus brining the agrarian status of Goa to a stand still and rendering the Comunidades, which are basically the agrarian institutions, paupers. This vile Tenancy Act needs to be repealed totally and absolutely and the tenanted properties of the Comunidades must be handed over back to the management of the Comunidades so that agriculture is promoted like it was thriving before the implementation of this thoughtless and malafide Act. Besides, as it is, with the amended of this Tenancy Act, the tenants, who are now considered deemed owners of these properties will be capitalizing on the contract farming schemes and will be running laughing to the banks while the legal and real owners, the COMUNIDADES, will be swatting flies.

GOANS must not allow such destructive schemes by shallow, short-sighted administrators at the cost of Goa's indigenous Comunidades. It has been reported that this is still an idea that the government is toying with. This Party hopes that the government gets tired toying with this idea and feels it fit to abandons it.

GOA GIVES A LUMINARY TO THE JUDICIARY

It will be a proud moment for Goa and Goans when our very own Mahesh Sonak is sworn in as Judge of the Bombay High Court at a function tomorrow at 10 am at the Bombay High Court in Mumbai. It will be a very special moment for Mahesh’s mother while his father the late Adv. S.K.Sonak , who was also a very illustrious lawyer, will be cheering his son from the heavens. Indeed, his imprint of moral integrity is unmistakably to be seen in his son.

As Mahesh Sonak assumes this momentous responsibility and the onerous burden cast on him, may these words of Mahatma Gandhi be his guiding maxims “There is a higher court than courts of justice and that is the court of conscience. It supercedes all other courts”.

Mahesh, along with another seven other very distinguished practicing lawyers, will take on the responsibility to dispense justice. Of the other seven being sworn in as Judges, five are from Mumbai and one each from Nagpur and Aurangabad. This will bring the strength of the Bombay High Court judges to 60, as against the sanctioned strength of 75. Three judges are due to retire later this year, including Justice A.P. Lavande on 20th August.

Our all deserving Mahesh Sonak who has always conducted himself with utmost dignity and decorum has been rightly selected to be a Judge. I have over the years had the occasion to appear against him in various petitions. A gentleman to the core, with a very broad outlook. Always very fair and understanding even to his opponent lawyer. It was a pleasure to appear against him. Very straight forward, humble, soft-spoken and very sincere. Never had a legal trick concealed under his sleeve which today unfortunately is becoming an integral vital part of the legal profession.

Mahesh Sonak has been unique. Despite having big business houses, the Casino operators and the Mining lords as his clients, he always also had the time and zeal to espouse the causes of the poor, deprived and the down trodden. All these typical qualities of Mahesh Sonak need to be imbibed by all those in the legal profession.

The meaning of the name ‘Mahesh’ is ‘great ruler’. Wishing Justice Mahesh Sonak all the very best while he steps up on the Temple of Justice. May he continue to be the Mahesh he always has been for the enlightened.

The match ended 2-1 in favor of Navelim when the referee who was ably assisted by Francis Fernandes and Nicholaus Fernandes on the lines finally blew the whistle, much to the relief of the Navelim supporters.

KUWAIT NEEDS GOODWILL FROM EXPATRIATES.

Having no safe place for delivering her blessed son, Mother Mary finally took shelter in the Stable where she delivered the baby boy Jesus Christ.

Having no other choice to hide her illegal status in Kuwait, recently the young female expatriate in Kuwait finally hid herself in the Bucket to avoid detection from the security personnel, unfortunately for her, she was caught.

Inspite of having her official and legal residence document in order, recently as reported in the local Press, one young Filipina lady was raped by the 2 Kuwaiti Policemen and by one Egyptian who was with them. This Filipina lady was sleeping peacefully in her room expecting no problem from the Kuwaiti security personnel. But even then she was not let to enjoy her freedom.

Now the question comes: Who and which expatriate is safe in Kuwait now? It looks  there is no more safe place left for the expatriates in Kuwait now going by the trend of this rape taken place.

The incident was this: These days security checks are very rigid for those who violate the local rules and regulations. Not only on the road but even at your homes at night time security personnel come and check your residence permits, if you fail to open the door of your Flat when they knock at your main door, they have authority even to break the main door and enter your Flat.

As per the report appearing in the local Arab Times dated 25th of this month, at about 3.00 in the midnight there was a knock at the door of one Flat where a Filipina lady of 39 years was alone sleeping while her female colleagues in the Flat were doing night duty. Hearing the midnight knock at her door, the sleeping lady got alerted and opened the main door. To her surprise she noticed a Policeman who entered inside and asked her Civil ID Card to check whether she is a legal or illegal resident of Kuwait. After noticing her status is legal in Kuwait, he went along with her to her bedroom and raped her inspite of her cries and pleas not to do so. Then another Policeman raped her followed by their Egyptian friend as well.

The raped lady then contacted her Philippine Embassy and handed over to Embassy the Handcuff one of the Policemen mistakenly forgot in her room. Philippine Embassy then contacted its Lawyer who in turn contacted the Undersecretary of Interior Ministry. Then immediately all the three culprits were arrested and they are now in Police custody pending trial. Kudos to the Undersecretary for taking such a swift action.

Arresting an illegal expatriate is not wrong but arresting a legal resident is wrong. It is my plea to the Government of Kuwait to put a full stop to the checking of residence status of expatriates at night time when they are sleepinng. The midnight knock has to be stopped, such midnight knocks were introduced in India by that Monster Indira Gandhi during her Emergency Rule in India in 1975, renowned Indian journalist Kuldeep Nayar was one of the victims of such Midnight Knock.

In Kuwait what I noticed is this that mostly the poor Filipinas are the victims of molestations and rapes even by the men in Uniforms. By raping the poor Filipina both the accused Kuwaiti Policemen brought dishonour and shame not only on them but also on their reputed and dignified Uniforms. I cannot understand why Filipinas are subjected to such an inhuman treatment especially by the men in Uniforms. Is it because of their fair complexion or poverty?

The worst type of humiliation Iraqi soldiers inflicted during the first three days of invasion of Kuwait in August 1990, in Kuwait City on poor Filipinas was when many of them were raped and sexually abused. It was inhuman and barbaric. To avoid further raping, on 4th day of the invasion of Kuwait, most of the Filipinas from the City area went underground and disappeared from this area taking shelter elsewhere in Kuwait. When Iraqi soldiers acted like wild animals in Kuwait the whole world condemned Iraqi men in Uniforms. Cannot world take note of Kuwaiti Policemen who failed to act decently befitting the dignity of their Uniforms? Good that this incident came to light openly but who can say there are no more such incidents happened in Kuwait which remained unnoticed due to many reasons? It is a worst crime to commit rapes by the men in Uniforms when they are duty bound to protect the females bodily. This incident brought Kuwait’s image into disrepute because law protectors turned law breakers.

Coming to your house by the Policeman at night time to check your residence papers creates scary feelings in you. This type of checking can be done even during the daytime but surely not at night time. This type of midnight knock at your door creates fear in you even though you may be a legal resident in Kuwait. The gravity of fear into the minds and hearts of expatriates has increased tremendously after the raping incident of a Filipina by the Kuwait Policemen. Because of this incident expatriates like me have lost our confidence in Kuwaiti Policemen. Expatriates like me in Kuwait are not slaves and by working in Kuwait we are not doing a favour on Kuwait and by allowing us to work in Kuwait, Kuwait is not doing a favour on us. It is purely a commercial dealing and no favour is involved in this transaction. It is only a commercial transaction.

The incidents like the Kuwaiti Policemen raping a Filipina creates a very bad image of Kuwait, not only internally but more externally. Kuwait needs more goodwill from all around the globe. During the invasion period of Kuwait, many persons came to me to advise me to withdraw our support to Kuwait giving so many excuses to justify their advice. We Goans under my leadership and initiative organised a heavy movement by holding public rallies and meetings in Goa to raise our voices against Iraq and in support of Kuwait. The ripples of our movement reached even to UN and all over the world evoking anger from Saddam Hussein who was under the impression that India is with him. But thru our movement we put Saddam Hussein into shame and brought pressure on Indian government to forcefully support Kuwait in world forums and outside.

One of the reasons the opponents of Kuwait cited was that Kuwaitis are raping our mothers, sisters, daughters and other females working as domestics in Kuwait adding further that these Kuwaitis should be taught a very good lesson otherwise they will not improve. But I flatly refused to accept their advice and we went ahead in our movement. My answer to them was this: I fully agree with what you said but this is not the time to tackle this issue. At an appropriate time I will handle this issue separately but now we have to go on with our movement against the invasion of Kuwait and we went ahead and succeeded thereby inviting appreciation from Kuwait government and other Kuwaitis.

Hence, Kuwait and Kuwaitis must strive to brighten their image globally by treating expatriates humanely.

FIGHT AGAINST MOPA AIRPORT.

http://www.oheraldo.in/News/Main%20Page%20News/Churchill-resolves-to-lead-anti-Mopa-drive/76030.html

Goa Su-Raj Party believes that the fight against MOPA must be leaderless. Leaders have made U-Turns after they got what they wanted and have taken the gullible supporters for jolly good rides. The need of the hour is that MOPA must be fought at all levels, tooth and nail, politically, apolitically and at citizens of Goa level, because, MOPA is going to be the back-door-merger of Goa into Maharashtra and Goa's Civilian Airport at Dabolim will be gobbled by the Navy, which, by the way, is the primary instigator for MOPA. Churchill Alemao is not saying anything new. Even a lay Goan knows that once MOPA comes up and is operational, the Navy will shut all Civilian flights at Dabolim. And who is going to question that? There will be thousand and one excuses given by the Navy to justify the closure of Civilian fights at Dabolim. Besides, the MOPA operators will be hand in in gloves with the Navy so that MOPA becomes the sole Civilian airport of Goa. When this happens, none of the present rulers will probably be around and therefore MOPA Airport will be the milling stone around the necks of Goans.

MOPA must be stopped at all costs. Therefore, every Goan fighting for this sole purpose is important and vital without a single-headed leader, for obvious reasons. Churchill Alemao's record on MOPA is highly unsatisfactory while the record of consistency of the UGDP is highly questionable. If not, GSRP would like the answers from the UGDP on their candidate having withdrawn from the bye-election race in the Cortalim Assembly Constituency in 2012 where Ms. Alina Saldanha was elected unopposed. By all means let Churchill Alemao lead the fight with his supporters. By all means, let the UGDP be the follower of the limp Congress led by Churchill Alemao, since Churchill Alemao is still in the Congress Camp. But let it not confuse the people of Goa with insinuations that Fr. Eremito is the agent of the BJP. The people of Goa are no fools to be sidelined. Let everyone contribute towards solidifying the fight in their own ways until the MOPA abomination is dropped to the satisfaction of all. But one thing is sure. Goa's ANTI MOPA fight must be GOA'S fight and not the fight of Churchill Alemao or Fr. Eremito Rebello or whoever. For, Goans cannot afford to lose this Anti MOPA fight. It is, again, vital to Goa's survival. They surely will, if they allow themselves to be DIVIDED by self-centered forced fighting in the name of Goa and Goans.

ON MOPA - FACTS AND FIGURES

$

The following article is forwarded to me by my ex Kuwait Goan friend Sebastian Rodrigues.  Since I find it very interesting, I publish it in goa-kranti.blogspot.com for the benefit of Kranti readers. AVF,

QUOTE:

Every person agrees that Goa needs state of art international airport. Some say navy should give land. Some further add navy should vacate goa. Let us see facts and figures.

Recently Goan weekly had published figures of land holding of Government of India in goa.

i. Land with airport authority at Dabolim – 36815 sqm

ii. Land with navy at Dabolim - 3,17,556 sqm

iii. Net total - 4,08,371 sqm

One runway for modern jets requires 3475m length and 45m width. 200m wide land strip is needed as freeway including runway shoulders on either side of runway (European aviation safety agency manual) Minimum Hz. Clearance between two run ways is 760 M Even Dubai airport has runway length 5.4km. Hence required area for one freeway will be 6,95,000 sqm. Besides this, area required for taxi way, terminal building, parking bays, maintenance area, cargo area and terminal area, vehicle parking and area required for other infrastructural facilities.

Now look at Mopa, total land area being acquired is 91, 71,000 sqm, out of this 58,66,000 sqm has already been acquired. Now million dollar question is whether Dabolim can accommodate domestic as well as international Airport with 2 runways? Total Land available at Dabolim is 4,08,371 sqm. Including land in possession with Navy at Dabolim., where as mopa can provide 58,66,000 sqm which is already available with the government.

Secondly mopa phase I will need Funding to tune of Rs.1230 crores(205 million $). Can we divert public fund for the airport instead of utilizing for pressing needs of health, education, roads, electricity and water. On the contrary, mopa airport will be privately funded green field project. Hence profitability of mopa airport with functional Dabolim domestic airport has to be accounted by the bidder, not by government.

Thirdly, international tourists are flying thousands of kilometers after well researched destination study, hence travelling from mopa to canacona will not tilt balance in favour of vengurla or malvan. It will be naïve to think that tourists flying thousands of kilometers will prefer to stay in and around pernem for holidays only due to proximity of airport.

Last but not the least, mopa airport will trigger development in hinter land of pernem, bardez, bicholim, sattari, tiswadi and ponda. Vast track of agricultural land will turn into vegetable, horticulture , dairy and service industry backyard for touristic demand to the tune of 60 lac tourist / yr. The total area of north goa is 1,73,600 hector having population to the tune of 8.18 lacs. Some fear that only north goa will be benefitted due to mopa. For the sake of argument, let us presume it is correct. Total area of north goa to the tune of 1,73,600 hector having population of 8.18 lac will be benefitted by sacrificing the area of 917 hector for airport . The affected land owners can be compensated with the market rate for land and partnership in the development. Friends, is it not worth?

Some fear that, part of Maharashtra will be benefitted due to Mopa air port. The konkan tourism will develop with mopa or without mopa as domestic airport at chipi is under construction. In fact, Mopa airport will provide better opportunities for Goan investors to invest in kokan hinter lands. Some investors have already taken such steps, hence mopa airport will increase the net worth of Goans.

This issue is not north versus south. Issue is grabbing only available opportunity to create lakhs of jobs in tourism, service sector for unemployed Goan youth.

The famous writer Dante in his epic poem, The Divine Comedy

“The darkest places in hell are reserved for those who maintain their neutrality in times of moral crisis”

Friends, finally choice rest with Goan youths

INJUSTICE FOR STUDENTS AT FR. AGNELO, VERNA.

Every parent of the children long to provide their children qualitative schooling and bearing this in mind they enroll their children in good school. Fr. Agnelo Asram at Verna is one such good school in Goa. My son was studying from KG to X standard at Fr. Agnelo Multiprpose High School, Verna. However, to my regret and disappointment this scholastic year he was denied admission for XI standard on flimsy ground.

In the X standard he scored overall 70% marks and in Science in particular he scored 80%. Inspite of this high percentage he was denied admission for XI while a boy who got only 65% was given admission. This is injustice done by the Principal of the school and this type of injustice goes against the principle and doctrine of Fr. Agnelo.

I feel sorry for enrolling my son in this school originally because inspite of having school in my village I volunteered for Fr. Agnelo at Verna. And now I am repenting.

It should be borne in mind that students get better percentage at Fr. Agnelo, Verna mainly because the parents thru private tuitions coach their children well besides the parents of the students take maximum interest in their children. What teachers cannot do at Fr. Agnelo, Verna the parents do. This point must be grilled into the brain of the current Principal of the school.

It is a pity that Principal of this school prefers outside students to the regulars. Such injustices were not happening earlier when Mr.Rebello was running the affairs of the school.

Goan singer KC set to make waves in music world

Artist: DSouzaKC – Goan lad (Bertrand D'Souza)
By Gasper Crasto

Who is the most gifted singer that you know of?

You can find out in this brief tête-à-tête with a talented songwriter, recording artist and composer – known to his friends simply as KC.

Bertrand D’Souza is born and bred in Kuwait, a place he says, “I will always call home because it has given me and my family much, for which I am very thankful. Hence, the 'KC' in my artist name, Kuwait City -- a way of symbolizing what made me who I am today.

“Tell me about your parents...” I said.

“My parents (Benjamin & Maria), hailing from Calangute, Goa, came to Kuwait in the early 80s and have been working here since. This was an outlet for my parents, having had a tough childhood. Both losing their father at a very young age with 6 other siblings to raise. This made me realize the importance of the opportunity I was given and has been the main motive behind my dedication to the music.

We were in India a short period during the Gulf War at which point I was only 3 months old. We made it back to Kuwait after the war was settled (1991).”
Bertrand studied at Carmel School, Kuwait from Kindergarten up until 12th grade. Since early kindergarten, Bertrand had the desire to showcase his God given musical talent.

“I am proud to be a Carmelite, I have plans to give back to the school through my music.” says Bertrand.

In 2008, Bertrand moved to Buffalo, New York for further studies and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from the State University at Buffalo in 2012.

“This has broadened my thinking and perception in various aspects of life,” says Bertrand about his graduation, “which has helped me to further develop my music through unique ideas based on my diverse experience.”

Together with his close friend from Carmel, Jonathan Fernandes (graduated from Bombay and also passionately involved in music and singing), the two have created music even though they have been based in different continents. They do not see this as a barrier to their growth in the field.

After graduation Bertrand moved to New York City where he gave music auditions for various record labels such as Def Jam records, Warner Brothers, etc. through the UROCK Tour.

The young lad, currently in Kuwait, is looking into MBA program options in Canada for the fall 2013 semester while creating music on the side.

“I have a bunch of ideas I wish to implement into my music, which unfortunately, I am unable to disclose at this point. The motive is to reach out to a maximum number of people, who are able to relate to the stories being told within the music. Music for the people. By the people.”, reveals Bertrand.

On his general outlook about his passion for music and lyrics, Bertrand discloses, “As I see life today, music seems to be the only thing connecting us together. There is much that can be done through music, perhaps even change the way we think, act and feel. It is imperious that we send out the right message because change within the people is necessary, yet, it is voluntary. With everything that is happening all around us, we have so much to be thankful for… most importantly, the opportunity.”

Check out the starting prayer in Bertrand’s track 'Amen'. It is simply amazing. The ‘Diamonds’ cover is another awesome, unbelievable track while ‘Adrenaline’ remains the most popular track till date.

Bertrand, surely has the vocal chops to make it in the big leagues. The young lad has a unique style that has drawn the attention of many, especially his friends, and friends of his friends.

The sky is too close to be the limit for such a great talent. Watch-out for this young Goan lad, he’s gonna blow your mind. Bertrand’s lyrics and vocal chords will certainly go the distance for many years to come...

VIVA SPAIN.

Well played Spain in the final of the Confederation Cup on Sunday, 30TH of last month, held in Brazil. I congratulate Spain for being worthy runners-up since this was the maximum it could attain from the mighty Brazil which is unbeatable currently. To say Viva Brazil will be a small compliment for such a fabulous team. Current Brazil squad is unconquerable by any national team of this planet; there is no team now in the world to defeat the existing Brazil. It is too powerful in every department of the game. This squad of Brazil resembles more or less the 1982 Brazil squad where in forward line Zico, Socrates, Eder and Falcao created havoc for their opponents and if they failed against Paulo Rossi’s Italy, it was only because luck failed them. The 1982 Brazil team had everything to win the Cup except Luck which is the most essential factor for the success.

Spain has given all their best to win the final but finally found impossible to out beat the mighty Brazil whose forward line with Neymar as a key player played artistic game of which type currently nobody plays. The accuracy of passing and shooting the ball by the Brazilians with excellent physical fitness were superb and their method of blasting the ball into the opponents’ goal from inside the penalty area without wasting time was appropriate. This was the instruction given by their both the world class coaches Filipe Scholarli and Carlos Alberto. Both these coaches were the world cup winners for Brazil earlier.

My full admiration goes to Spanish team and their people to accept this defeat gracefully by praising the winners Brazil, of course deservingly without giving silly excuses. Minus Brazil, Spain alone is the winner of Confederation Cup.

In 1970 World Cup held in Mexico, Brazil under Pele’s genius massacred the mighty Italy under Fascheti, Riva, Rivera and Mazzola but when they returned back to Italy, at Rome Airport as the runners-up, the Italians were welcomed by the Italian crowd as World Champions because they said Brazil team is unbeatable having in its ranks super footballers like Pele, Tostao, Revelino, Gerson and skipper Carlos Alberto. Minus Brazil, they concluded, Italians are the world best. Hence the hero’s welcome for them.

Neymar of Brazil at the young age of 21 become a millionaire is a hard fact but to equate him to Pele is not correct. In the current scenario he is the best but not as best as Pele was at 21. There cannot be another Pele because Pele is Pele and such Peles come in this world only once in centuries. And according to me we will never get another Pele at least during our life time.

If Brazil won the Confederation Cup last week it was not because of the genius of Neymar but because of their superb team work in which Spanish players had to give in a lot for their opponents’ high tactics. Brazil played like a well-oiled machine from the point of their keeper to their forward line. World has to learn a lot from this Brazil squad. It is not the victory that matters the most but it was the entertaining soccer that Brazil dished out. After many years we got an opportunity to see the real Brazilian soccer.

WELL DONE BRAZIL.

Vanishing Velim

The villages of Assolna Velim Cuncolim are known for its patriotism and Velim amongst the three has a huge history of producing some of Goa’s finest freedom fighters. But sadly the land they fought for has a small dwindling population as people have left Velim for the cities of Margao and Panjim.

“Velim along with its neighbouring villages of Assolna and Cuncolim (AVC) do not just have a huge significance in Goa, but also internationally. AVC has the largest Goan diaspora clubs across Dubai, Kuwait, London, Canada, California and Saudi Arabia. The people of Velim have never forgotten their roots,” stated member secretary of Goa State Pollution Control Board Member Secretary, Lavinson Martins.

Martins points out that Velim has produced two Olympians in Veece and Leander Paes who were brought up in the tiny quite village of Velim. But slowly, as educational facilities, infrastructure and supply of water and electricity did not improved in the village, people began to move out to the cities for better opportunities.

“People moved out of Velim for better opportunities, more for their children in terms of education while a few migrated. But in Velim, people are not of the kind that sold off their land. People in Velim still come back on the weekends and have renovated their old Portuguese homes,” asserted Francis Braz, a Velim based entrepreneur who now lives in Margao.

Similarly Simon Barreto, who moved from Velim to Margao to begin a cold storage unit almost two decades back points that Velim was a quite dead village with no entertainment and social events for the women folk especially, a reason why people left their land.

“I blame the people then. Everybody was so laid back after liberation. I remember in my two stints as Sarpanch, there would be just twelve people at a gram sabha meeting in the 1985-1990. There were electricity and water problems, so people chose the easy way out and left the village,” points out noted lawyer Savio Caeiro.

Advocate Caeiro points out that Velim is very significant considering its proximity to Cabo de Rama, which was once a major port and Betul that has its importance because of the fishing jetty. But the infrastructure, transport facility and lack of educational institutions left Velim behind despite having learned individuals like Ferdinand Rebello, Mario Vaz, Roque Satan, Filipe Neri Rodrigues and Farrel Furtado as past MLAs.

The newly elected MLA, Benjamin D’Silva, pointed out that Velim’s biggest problem has been the erratic water supply, bad supply of electricity and BSNL’s poor connectivity, topped by no job opportunities as a large population of Velim depends on agriculture.

“I have now got two junior engineers dedicated to Velim only to improve electrical supply, besides drawing a road map with the PWD and water supply officials. Also, I have invited the tourism department to come and look at how Velim’s Portuguese architecture homes can be tapped for tourism since our nearness to to Cabo de Rama, Betul and Cutbona jetty. Velim’s past MLAs have not bothered to improve infrastructure in the village,” asserted Benjamin.

“The biggest significance of nationalism in Velim comes from its Carnival celebration where the National Flag is hoisted and a traditional lamp is lite (maide) on the mand (stage) and Velim alone across Goa keeps this tradition alive in the midst of all three days of the Carnival celebration which is very patriotic,” stated Martins.

In the midst of migration and peole leaving Velim, Pilot Costa, a velim resident remembers the great debates by Ferdinand Rebello, Mario Vaz, Roque Satan and other great legislators who brought about great laws for the state when they represented the Assembly. He only rues the fact that it was only in the 1990’s that Velim was delimited into a separate constituency from Cuncolim which have been done much earlier.

IMPORTANCE OF MAIDS & EXPATRIATES IN KUWAIT.

$
0
0

Maid and Aya, these two words are very popular in Kuwait though both  are interpreted as same in meaning, one is English word while the other an Indian word coming from Sanskrit meaning Ai-i means a mother. According to our elders who came in early fifties to work at Oil sector in Ahmadi, Kuwait, the Britishers employed at KOC,  first time  recruited Ayas from India  to work in their houses provided by the KOC. The word Aya means Mother whose job is to take care of the children of their employers just the way the real mothers do except breast feeding.

From the Britishers the locals learnt the lesson to hire the services of Indian Ayas whom the locals started recruiting directly from Goa, Mangalore and Bombay.  The early Ayas to come to Kuwait from Goawere in late fifties but in sixties and seventies their number increased tremendously because plenty of money started flowing into the hands of plenty of  locals who started living an affluent and sophisticated life. Though the Maids were recruited to do the job of Ayas that is to take care of the small children of their employers but later on they were made to do the different types of jobs which were not suitable for the females.  But having no choice the poor Ayas surrendered to the diktats of their employers.

Goan maids are the most sincere and faithful in Kuwaitdoing their jobs most sincerely.  The maids or Ayas working in Kuwaitare called Domestics and being so they are categorised in the eyes of law in different category as far as their Residence Permits are concerned. Maids or Ayas or Domestics as they are called here because of their domestic residence permit category, as per the law are not supposed to work outside of their sponsors houses but some sponsors of the Ayas allow them to work outside. When they work outside they make more money and enjoy more freedom.

During the time of invasion of Kuwait many of the maids in Kuwait made great sacrifices even without returning back to their home countries.  These maids were so faithful to their employers and their children that they even volunteered to die in Kuwait along with their employers for their sake and for the love of their employers and their children.  They spent the entire invasion period with fear and tension of war. By doing this type of sacrifice for the love of their employers and their children they even forgot their own children and their other family members. Their sacrifices were really great.  This point has to be remembered very well and always when dealing with the maids in Kuwait. After the invasion some of the maids went back to their home countries without even taking their salaries since they understood well the financial difficulties their employers were facing. Those who are treating them harshly either lawfully or unlawfully must show some compassions for their plight and for the sacrifices they made when they were not duty bound to do the same.

On the 4th day of the invasion of Kuwait, American troops started coming to Saudia Arabia to protect this land from Iraqis. In fact on the 4th day of the invasion of Kuwait, the Iraqi invading troops of Kuwait late in the afternoon were moving and while going from their Military Jeeps and Lorries they were shouting saying "we are now going to Saudia".  This I saw with my own eyes at Kuwait City when Iraqi troops were moving towards Saudia. This move of American troops to Saudi Arabia was a surprise for Saddam Hussein and with this anger he issued a warning to America that if its troos enter Kuwait, he will convert Kuwait into a graveyard for all its residents. Was it difficult for him to execute his threat?  Being an Arab Monster anything and everything was possible for him.

When this threat was issued, most of the countries according to the information available at that time, supplying manpower to Kuwait were shocked and silently they started pleading with Saddam Hussein thru proper diplomatic channels not to take such a heinous actions. Then as per information Saddam Hussein for the sake of expatriates life in Kuwait withdrew this threat and secondly Americans also did not give him any opportunity to go ahead with his threat.

During the invasion time of Kuwait, expatriates acted like a human shield for Kuwait.  Many of the expatriates were of great help to Kuwaitis as well. They may be a hindrance now but at the critical time they were of great help to Kuwait and Kuwaitis just as Domestics. This fact cannot be ignored.
